History of Fire Safety
Business began in 1968 in the Wood River, Illinois basement of a 37-year old fire fighter with 10 years of experience, the support of his wife, a few hundred dollars investment, a 14-year old truck and several fire extinguishers. Thirty years later, founders Bob and Mary Stocker are celebrating success.
Fire Safety,
Inc. was launched in response to frequent requests received by the Wood
River Fire Department from people wanting to purchase fire extinguishers.
Most callers were referred to St. Louis for fire-safety equipment until
the Stockers set up shop in their basement on June 17, 1968. "I knew there
was a local need to be filled, but I knocked on a lot of doors and wore
out plenty of shoes those first few years," recalls Bob. Gradually the name
Fire Safety, Inc. became more familiar, and by the early 1970's he and Mary
had won a contract with an Alton company to refill 100 extinguishers a month
- a contract that meant it was time to hire a sales person and expand into
a larger space. As more companies recognized Fire Safety, Inc.'s expertise in the research of state-of-the-art fire protection technology and regulations, the client list grew. It seems a dedication to sales and service of high quality, cost effective products that protect life, property and environment against fire and toxic materials, met the needs of an increasing number of businesses.
Today, as Fire Safety, Inc. celebrates its 30th anniversary, our resolve to remain a leader in the fire protection industry and the premier fire protection company in the Midwest is steadfast. Our staff includes more than 50 specially trained employees headquartered in Wood River, Illinois with satellite offices in St. Louis and Columbia, Missouri. We maintain a fleet of nearly 30 service vehicles for maximum response spanning the 100,000+ square miles we service. We remain relentless in acquiring the latest and best technology in fire suppression and detection hardware, maintenance capabilities, training techniques and management systems. Fire Safety, Inc. in fact, was the first company in the metropolitan St. Louis area that utilized a bar code system to generate reports and update equipment databases. Known as the PROTRAC computer based bar code management system, it is specially designed to comply with NFPA and OSHA standards and insurance requirements.
